The Stairway (Plein Aire) Details

16 x 20 Oil on Panel – $1,900.00

This is a painting done en plain aire (meaning essentially “in open air”) in the Stokes County region of North Carolina. One of the things that I enjoyed so much about this piece was the upward perspective I had when painting it. Thanks to a large dry outcropping of rock, I was able to stand right in the middle of the falls, getting a strong stair-step pattern of the rock formations as I looked back and up.

I tend to also like doing paintings that have subtle symbolism within them, and I couldn’t help picking up on the appearance of an ascending stairway. The symbolic reference to things such as life lessons, enlightenment, transitions, etc. only heightened my fascination with the scene, and made it a wonderful subject to paint.
